The Hidden Trails of the Werner-Sauter Biological Reserve

Hiking Sámara: What Lies Behind the Jungle Canopy

While it’s easy to spend your entire trip looking out at the Pacific, some of Sámara’s greatest magic is hidden just behind the tree line. The Werner-Sauter Reserve is a protected tropical dry forest teeming with howler monkeys, neon green tree frogs, and incredible birdlife. Taking a morning hike up through the canopy gives you a stark, stunning contrast to the beach layout below. We’re breaking down what to pack, when to hit the trailhead to beat the midday heat, and how to spot the local wildlife hiding in plain sight.

The Hike at a Glance

The standard trek through the Werner-Sauter Reserve takes about 2.5 to 3 hours to complete. It is considered a moderate hike that winds through the unique tropical dry forest before an uphill climb rewards you with sweeping, panoramic views of Sámara Bay and the coastline. The trail is accessible for most fitness levels, but expect a solid, steady workout on the way to the summit.

Beating the Midday Heat

Timing is everything in Guanacaste. To avoid the intense tropical heat, plan to arrive at the trailhead between 7:30 AM and 8:00 AM. While the jungle canopy provides excellent natural shade, the humidity builds rapidly by late morning. Starting early not only keeps you comfortable, but the cooler morning hours are also the most active time for the forest ecosystem before the animals settle in for their afternoon rest.

How to Spot the Wildlife

The jungle is loud but visually elusive. Here is how to train your senses to spot the locals:

  • Listen First: The deep, echoing calls of howler monkeys will usually give away their position long before you actually see them in the canopy. Listen for snapping twigs or rustling leaves to spot coatis or armadillos on the forest floor.

  • Look for Broken Patterns: Animals blend in perfectly. Instead of looking for a whole monkey or bird, look for a sudden shake of a branch, a flash of iridescent blue from a Morpho butterfly, or the distinct silhouette of an iguana basking on a sunlit log.

  • Pacing: Move slowly and keep conversation to a quiet murmur. If you truly want to maximize your sightings, hiring a local reserve guide is the ultimate shortcut. Their eyes are highly trained to spot things you would normally walk right past.

What to Pack

Keep your daypack light, but come prepared for the elements. You will need:

  • Sturdy Footwear: Closed toe hiking shoes or trail runners are essential for navigating uneven terrain and exposed roots.

  • Hydration: Bring at least one to two liters of water per person.

  • Sun & Bug Protection: Apply an eco friendly insect repellent and sunscreen before you leave the room.

  • Breathable Clothing: Lightweight, moisture wicking fabrics will make the humidity significantly more manageable.

  • Binoculars or a Zoom Lens: Essential for getting a clear view of exotic birds and monkeys high up in the mango and strangler fig trees.

I fell in love with Costa Rica the moment my toes touched the sand and never left.

I’ve been living in this beautiful country since 2024 and you will find me at the hotel, on our boat; or enjoying a cold beer on the beach. Retiring in Costa Rica isn’t just about moving to a new country, it’s about stepping into a whole new way of life. Imagine waking up to the sound of monkeys, the scent of the tropical air, and the feeling of warm sunshine each and every day. I can.

This is a place where life slows down, where vibrant greens of the rainforest meet the endless blue of the Pacific Ocean, and where the philosophy of “Pura Vida” isn’t just a saying, but a principal of life. I found my dream in a place where peace and adventure coexist, and everyday feels like an opportunity to discover. This is the ultimate reward after working for 4 decades in the oil & gas sector of Alberta, Canada.

Lucia Murcia Cordero

Hi, I’m Luci – a diver, mom, and passionate believer in the kind of adventures that ignite the soul.

Although I grew up in the city, I’ve been in love with the ocean for as long as I can remember. That passion led me to study Marine Biology and Natural Resource Management, and for over ten years I’ve dedicated my career to sustainable tourism, creating meaningful nature based experiences, and developing environmental education and marine conservation programs.

I founded my own dive center, Dive Buddies, in the beautiful coastal town of Sámara, Costa Rica. Here, I’ve had the privilege of exploring the incredible marine life that calls these waters home while also discovering the warmth, tranquility, and genuine sense of community that make Sámara such a special place.

My goal is to inspire people to discover just how extraordinary the ocean truly is, to experience its beauty safely, and to show that there are countless ways to appreciate and protect it. Whether it’s through diving, education, or simply spending time by the sea, I hope every experience fosters a deeper connection with the ocean and a desire to care for it for generations to come.
